okay, I’m gonna split that comic into two pics and see if it shows up in the tag
has anybody had a problem with posts not showing up in the sitewide tags? i’ve run into this problem a couple times before and I don’t know why it happens. my last post isn’t showing up and reposting it has never fixed the problem for me, so, what gives?
i think there are some interesting reads to be made about the cyclical and mutually destructive nature of 2B and 9S’ relationship, but the fact is that this is by neither of their own faults so much as that of the system they exist in. the tragedy of their interactions with each other is that neither of them wants the destructive relationship that they have, but they are bound by their duty to the vision of humanity to uphold it. this is why Ending E is so uplifting: because they are no longer burdened by the violent framework that has defined their entire relationship up to this point, and they are free to live their lives as they truly want.
i’ve seen people talk about thorfinn’s “i have no idea what a slave feels like” line as an example of foreshadowing for future events but if we look at it juxtaposed to the rest of the chapter it’s definitely dramatic irony for the fact that he is already a slave to his revenge.
his single-minded thirst for revenge is what has tied him to askeladd for over a decade and is a powerful enough force that askeladd can use it to manipulate him into doing almost anything – when askeladd talks about how “every man is a slave to something” earlier in the chapter and then duels thorfinn (and, very importantly, absolutely thrashes him when he goads thorfinn’s anger and sense of vengeance) as a “reward” for the task he used him for earlier… masterful storytelling tbh.
plus, in the manga the scene with the slave girl also segues into the introduction of vinland both as a location and as a narrative symbol; thorfinn doesn’t consciously realize he’s a slave to his revenge yet, but like her, he still yearns to be free, to be “somewhere not here”, and that informs his motivations through the entirety of the story, even after the events of the 50-chapter prologue. it’s probably the most powerful scene in one of the most theme-setting chapters of the whole manga.
ok buckle up my hot take of the day is that the general public would be way more receptive to actually learning about what “queerplatonic relationships” are as a concept if they weren’t turned off by the completely nondescriptive and unapproachable name that contains a word a number of people aren’t totally comfortable with, because judging from how widespread the found family trope is, in a vacuum the idea of a special relationship between people that isn’t traditionally romantic or sexual in nature isn’t actually that hard to palate. i will take any other name at this point. we can start calling them nakamas for all i care. partners, but like in the cowboy sense. moirallegiances. literally anything else
i see y’all reblogging stuff i posted in 2014 that didn’t get any attention then and suddenly i begin to understand how dead artists who only got famous after they died feel
