Chapter 1:
9S was a vampire. There was no denying it. His skin was pale and cold. His heart no longer beats. His teeth were sharp and white as snow. He had an insatiable thirst for blood.
And he hated every moment of it.
He always despised vampires when he was still human. Always. They caused so much pain to innocent people; he couldn’t grasp how they could inflict so much suffering without a care in the world or even stand the thought. He’d lost countless friends and loved ones to their curse.
2B was a vampire hunter and all he had left. 9S Vowed to one day join her in hunting them, but his body was weak and frail and he had almost resigned himself to simply watch her work from the shadows…

i think there are some interesting reads to be made about the cyclical and mutually destructive nature of 2B and 9S’ relationship, but the fact is that this is by neither of their own faults so much as that of the system they exist in. the tragedy of their interactions with each other is that neither of them wants the destructive relationship that they have, but they are bound by their duty to the vision of humanity to uphold it. this is why Ending E is so uplifting: because they are no longer burdened by the violent framework that has defined their entire relationship up to this point, and they are free to live their lives as they truly want.
