i get the sentiment of going “tumblr needs financial support if its going to continue to exist” but from a practical standpoint specifically nobody is going to pay money to get rid of tumblr ads when 1. the stupid ads are half the experience 2. the people who care about them already use adblockers and are already extremely, extremely resistant to paying to not have ads because it comes across as restoring a negative part of the experience back to the expected default, not a positive addition you’re getting anything out of. like paying for an ad-free experience feels less like a service and more like getting extorted. tumblr would get better mileage out of selling funny hats for your icon or whatever
